Personal Finance: How to clean up ID theft mess

Personal Finance: How to clean up ID theft mess

 a

Police unveiled one of the largest identity-theft scandals in New York last week, with authorities arresting 111 suspects tied to a global crime ring based largely in Queens. Using stolen credit- card data, the thieves rang up millions of dollars’ worth of luxury merchandise and services all over the world.

For the unfortunate victims of this crime — or any ID theft scandal — they will need to clean up the mess on their own.

Here’s some immediate advice:

Contact one of the three major credit-reporting agencies — TransUnion, Equifax and Experian — to place a fraud alert on your file, which should prevent more false accounts from being opened in your name. Here’s their contact info:

Place a fraud alert
  • TransUnion -  1-800-680-7289www.transunion.com

    Equifax - 1-800-525-6285www.equifax.com

    Experian - 1-888-397-3742
    www.experian.com

    Review your credit reports
When you place a fraud alert on your credit file, you’re able to receive a free copy of your credit report — one from each of the three agencies. Check your reports for any incorrect information.

    Close bogus accounts
Dispute credit cards or bank accounts that were illegally opened in your name by notifying both the credit-reporting agency that lists the false information and the fraud department at the related bank or creditor. Banks and creditors should issue you fresh cards with new account numbers.

How To Be Organized:

How To Organize Coats

Instantly upgrade your coat closet, or any closet for that matter, by replacing mismatched hangers with matching ones. This will create a uniform look and give an overall neatened appearance to your coat closet.  The best hangers for coats are wide-shoulder wooden hangers, which bear weight better than plastic ones. The contour of the hanger will keep the shape of coats, and the width will ensure space between coats and prevent them from wrinkling.

To maximize closet space, hang short and longer coats in two separate groups.

This way, you can utilize the space under the short coats to store other items.

Face all coats in the same direction, noting that the curved side of the hanger (if it has one) goes to the front.

If coat closet space is tight, then limit how many coats each family member keeps there.

This will make it an active, user-friendly closet rather than a storage closet.

Store off-season coats elsewhere.

Aim to leave space in the closet (and a few empty hangers) for guest coats

The Good Old Days...

Bottle of Bayer’s Heroin

Between 1890 and 1910 heroin was sold as a non-addictive substitute
for morphine. It was also used to treat children with a strong cough.

Coca Wine, anyone?

Metcalf’s Coca Wine was one of a huge variety of wines with cocaine on
the market. Everybody used to say that it would make you happy and
it would also work as a medicinal treatment.

Mariani Wine

Mariani wine was the most famous Coca wine around 1875.
Pope Leo XIII used to carry one bottle with him all the time.
He awarded Angelo Mariani (the producer) with a Vatican gold medal.

Maltine with your Coca?

Produced by Maltine Manufacturing Company of New York.
It was suggested that you should take a full glass with or after every meal,
but children should take half a glass.

Paper Weight

A paper weight promoting C.F. Boehringer & Soehne (Mannheim, Germany).
They were proud of being the biggest producers in the world of products
containing Quinine and Cocaine.

Opium for Asthma

Considered safe since it contained no more than 40% alcohol opium...

Cocaine Tablets

All stage actors, singers teachers and preachers had to have them in the 1900's
for a maximum performance. Great to “smooth” the voice.

Cocaine Toothache Drops

Very popular for children in 1885. Not only did they relieve the pain,
they made the children happy...

Opium for Newborns !!

This would make them sleep well - Opium with 46% alcohol

No wonder they were called The Good Old Days!
